Answering Your #CHOOSEAUTHENTICITY Questions

During our #CHOOSEAUTHENTICIY week we asked you what questions you had for us as an organization. We collected them all and wanted to take the time to answer. So we thought we would provide a little Q & A for everyone:

Will KKi be coming out with Toddler/Children clothes? – Marie

We definitely want to continue to expand and diversify our product offering. Stay tuned for new and different looks in the coming months!

Is there anyway that you guys could think about making mittens? Wisconsin winters are cold, and I just love you guys :) – Stacie

We will definitely think about it! We want to help keep our friends to the north warm and fashionable in the winter months. It probably won’t happen this season, but continue to follow along for all kinds of new products.

As KKi grows, what kind of systems do you or will you have in place to make sure that the practices remain ethical and true to the origin of KKI as an organization? – Macee

We make commitments to our beneficiaries to employ them at a fair wage, decided on by the community in which we are working, for a period of 3-5 years. We also make our decisions regarding the program with our Company Values in mind always. We could go on and on but know that we are always aspiring to improve our programs and do the best we can for our beneficiaries.

Do you have offices in SF? – Cordlaine

At the moment our HQ remain based in Costa Mesa, CA. We love our warehouse and want to stay focused and centered in one space.

What is the cost break down of how much someone makes with one hat? How many people do you hire? What sort of other ways of sustainability do you provide for them? – Sarah

Wages – In an effort to be respectful of our beneficiaries privacy we don’t share exact wages, however our goal is to provide 85% of all our expenses to supporting the women we work with and the programs we provide to them (last year was even higher than this!).

Employment – We currently have 180 beneficiaries between Peru and Uganda as well as 28 international staff members.

Sustainability – We have a very multifaceted approach to empowerment. A job is one aspect of that, and then we also provide education on a variety of subjects (from literacy to budgeting) and we provide one-on-one mentorship. This is the full picture of impact that we believe will truly change communities.

Out of the Office, Into the Compound

Regaining Hope for the Future
Lucy Elizabeth Santibanez Gutierrez is one of the first faces you’ll see each morning at Krochet Kids Peru. Small, radiant lady grinning ear to ear, shouting buenos dias with a kiss. She grew up in the mountains and attended nursing school. After years of education and working side jobs to pay the fees, she was traveling to purchase her final diploma papers and legal documents when she was robbed. Robbed of everything; her money, diploma, dreams and spirit. She was forced to start over, working side jobs once again. She lost hope for her future and worked only to better her daughter’s life.

Lucy was offered a job with KKP, and started as one of our first knitters. Over the next year she moved up to a group leader position and then recently received a promotion to Assistant Knitter. She now leads and manages her fellow knitters in making Peru’s amazing products. Empowering Lucy with a stable job and loving environment has enabled her to regain hope. Women like Lucy are what continue to motivate what we do here at Krochet Kids intl.

Why Say Thank You

What is the power of a thank you? During #CHOOSEGRATITUDE (click the link to get caught up!) we told you not to underestimate it, we encouraged you to share it. Your thank you is shared with the lady who made your hat and serves as encouragement and true empowerment for the work she is doing in Uganda or Peru.

Writing your thank-you is an integral part of our model. We strive to not only provide a job, education, and mentor system for these women, but also build them up. By helping these ladies achieve higher self-esteem we are opening the door for them to grow as people.

#CHOOSEEMPOWERMENT

Help Us Help Those Living In Need Help Themselves

The culmination and result of the #CHOICES you make when you support Krochet Kids intl. is one thing: EMPOWERMENT. This is the goal of our work and what you are helping us accomplish when you purchase KKi products or share our story with friends.

We define empowerment as equipping people with the tools, resources, and knowledge to pursue their own independent and self-reliant futures. Through our experiences in the developing world we found that many of the people living in poverty were not looking for further handouts or temporary means to survival. Instead, they were eager to take control of their own futures and to provide for themselves.

This is the shift in perspective that we must have. And this is how we can not only help those living in need, but also restore dignity to people all around the world.
